I get this question all the time from both clients and co-workers. I am a licensed cosmetologist so I am certified in hair, makeup, nails and waxing. I focus on mostly hair and makeup and waxing is something that may be coming in the future… But since I get asked this question so frequently I thought I would clarify.
I always say makeup is my roots. That’s how this whole career started. I actually stumbled upon an app that had a bunch of makeup tutorials on it and I was instantly intrigued. I then thought to look on YouTube to see if there were more. I discovered a whole world I hadn’t known existed. There were so many people talking about makeup. The first person I discovered on YouTube was Emily Noel. I still watch her to this day. Her style is very natural, practical for the average person and she’s always trying to find the cheaper alternative that works just as good as the expensive one. She’s so full of knowledge and I would recommend anyone to watch her. Anyways, I was obsessed. That was when I knew it was something I never wanted to stop learning about. I was in 8th grade when I discovered YouTube. By the time I was in High School and discovered there was a Cosmetology program I knew that I needed to be in that program.
When I first started school I was actually dead set on not doing hair. I didn’t think I would ever be any good at it and I didn’t feel that it came naturally to me like it did for others. Since a good 80% of what you learn in school is hair that feeling quickly went away. I also always remembered being told that if you did both you were more valuable.
I’ve struggled back and forth with hair because that feeling of not being any good at hair and that it didn’t come naturally always stuck with me. But I also didn’t wanna give up and knew lots of practice and learning was needed. I’ve decided that I really enjoy styling so I’m sticking with that.
Long story short, I like makeup more because it holds a special place in my heart. It was the spark, it’s what initially intrigued me and always will. But, the more I grow, the more I learn and the better I get the more I love it. The confidence I need is something that needs to come from within me. It’s actually so crazy to think that this time last year I was terrified to do an updo on someone. Anyways, I’m here for both hair and makeup because I genuinely love my job.
