My Top 3 Tricks for Achieving Volume

The bigger the hair the closer to Jesus, am I right?! Haha, just kidding of course. But, it’s not very often a client asks me for no volume at all. Now, I can give you volume all day long with a blowout or updo; but, how is that going to transfer over to when it’s 6 AM and your getting ready for work, there's 20 minutes until you have to leave and still have time to stop and get your Dunkin coffee and 30 minutes before you REALLY have to leave without being late. In this blog post I am going to share with you my top 3 tricks on how you can achieve voluminous hair, simply, at home.

Trick #1 Blowdrying

As far as volume goes, I would definitely say the way you blow dry your hair is going to make a huge difference on how your hair will lay. This will especially be beneficial if you shower and blow dry in the morning before going to work, school etc. When you’re blow drying your hair you’re going to want to flip your hair and blow dry in the opposite direction of where you want it to lay. So, for example, if your part is on the right side of your head, you will take all of that hair and flip it to the left side of the head and then blow dry the roots. Thus, when flipping it over you have created height and lift. If you want to get real fancy, you can take a brush made for blow drying your hair (my personal favorites are from Olivia Garden) and pull the hair in the opposite direction (part on the left side of the head, smooth hair to right side of the head) of your part, smoothing and straightening the hair as you go. For the back of the head, you can pull the hair forward.

Another great trick to achieve volume while blow drying is flipping your hair upside down. My only suggestion with blow drying upside down is that you make sure you blow dry in the direction of the hair. To put into simpler terms, point the blow dryer towards the ground. If you point the blow dryer towards the ceiling, you’re going the opposite way your hair lays, creating frizz.

If you have curly hair and blow dry using a diffuser, the best way to create lift is running your fingers through the root of your hair and holding them there while diffusing. This will create a natural lift in the hair.

Trick # 2 Styling Products

Of course, a good product can always give you the right amount of va va voom that you’re going for. Here are some of my top general styling products that give you amazing lift and volume.

Mousse- Mousse is a great product to use on damp hair before blow drying. Generally, mousse is applied to the root of damp hair but can sometimes be applied all over the hair depending on the product.

My favorite mousse at the moment is ColorProof’s SuperPlump Whipped Bodifying Mousse. This is brand new to the line and provides shape, volume, hold and shine while conditioning the hair. It is also light weight, doesn’t weigh the hair down, salt-free so it doesn’t strip the hair and provides UVA/UVB color and heat protection up to 450 degrees. If you live in the Ballston Spa area, you can purchase this mousse at Haven Salon or you can buy it online on Colofproof’s website.

Texture Spray and Dry Shampoo- Texture spray and dry shampoo are another great way to add volume to the hair and refresh your style. Both are similar in what they do and have similar benefits. Texture spray adds texture to the root or ends of the hair which “fluffs” the hair and gives it body. It also adds grip to the hair which helps with hold and works well hand-in-hand with teasing the hair. Dry shampoo is made to soak up the excess oil on your scalp but it also adds some grip and texture which helps with volume. If sprayed on the ends of the hair it can have the same effects as texture spray.

My favorite texture spray for a while now has been ColorProof’s TextureCharge Texture Spray and my favorite dry shampoo is either Neuma’s reNeu Dry Shampoo or IGK’s First Class Charcoal Detox Dry Shampoo. You can get TextureCharge and reNeu at Haven Salon, in Ballston Spa, and also online on Colorproof and Neuma’s websites. You can get the IGK dry shampoo on their website as well as Sephora’s website.

Texture Powder

Not to be confused with texture spray, but very similar. Texture powder is extremely gritty. It generally comes in a small bottle and ‘puffs’ out like a smoke cloud. It is meant to be sprayed into the root for grittiness and mega volume. Also works great hand-in-hand with teasing. I use this all the time when doing updos and would be great used at the crown of your head.

My favorite texture powder is Big Sexy Hair Powder Play Lite. You can get this online on their website.

Trick #3 Volume Shampoo & Conditioner

The easiest way to achieve more volume in your hair is getting a volume shampoo and conditioner. In my personal opinion, you will see results by using a volumizing shampoo and conditioner, but not as much as blow drying and adding styling products. But, that’s just my opinion.

My favorite volumizing shampoo and conditioners are Neuma’s Volume Shampoo and Conditioner and ColorProof’s SuperPlump Volume Shampoo and Conditioner. Both can be purchased at Haven Salon, in Ballston Spa, as well as online on Neuma and ColorProof’s websites.

I hope you’re ready to tackle the day now with your bombshell, Victoria’s Secret voluminous hair. Let me know in the comments down below if these simple tricks changed your life and your hair game!
